Use iMovie on the iPhone 4

With the iPhone 4’s iMovie app, you can produce entire movies right on your mobile device. Here’s how to become an auteur of your own.

Step 1: Get the app
Connect your iPhone 4 to the internet via a wireless network, download iMovie from the App Store, and install it. Then, tap the iMovie icon to open it.

Step 2: Choose a theme
Tap the plus sign to start a new project. Choose a theme, which includes stylized titles, transitions, and music you can use in your movie.

You can change themes at any time by tapping the Settings icon within iMovie.

Step 3: Take new footage
Build your movie. Tap the lower-right icon to take new footage with the iPhone’s front and rear cameras — choose a camera, adjust to shoot video or still images, and press the record button to start and stop filming or to take a photo. Happy with your clip? Tap “Use” and add it to the timeline at the bottom of the screen.

Tap a photo to adjust the zoom and panning effects on it.

Step 4: Add existing footage
Tap the lower-left icon and access your Media Library, where you can choose videos and photos from your Camera Roll and music from your Audio Library to add to your timeline. Press the play symbol at any time to watch your film.

You cannot use music protected through digital rights management in your movie.

Step 5: Edit it
Edit your movie. Hold and drag a photo or video to move it around within the timeline. Tap a clip to bring up yellow lines you can move around to change start and stop times; double-tap to pull up the Clip Settings menu and adjust titles, tag its geographic location, or turn its audio on or off.

Step 6: Adjust transitions
Double-tap the Transitions icon between clips to adjust the transition from one piece of footage to the next. When you’re finished, tap the “Project View” icon to return to the Projects Menu and tap the lower-left corner icon to export a medium, large or high definition version of your film to the Camera Roll.

Step 7: Share your film
Go to your iPhone’s Camera Roll, tap the icon in the upper-right corner, and select your movie. Then, share your work via e-mail, SMS, or YouTube, and give the world a window into your filmmaking soul.
